Let Freedom Ring

“Yoga allows you to find a new kind of freedom that you may not have known even existed.”  B.K.S. Iyengar

Celebrate July with fireworks and freedom! When Susannah asked me to contribute a blog post for Hudson River Yoga's July newsletter, I was like… “YES” I have the perfect title, Let Freedom Ring.  In July we celebrate Independence Day and the abundant freedoms we have in this great country. Despite living in this free land, many of us are trapped in our own worlds of insecurity and stress. To me Yoga is all about freedom. The freedom to challenge your thoughts, your perceptions and discover your truth. The freedom to accept who you are and not who you think you are supposed to be. The freedom to accept yourself and life as it is. The freedom to be the miraculous manifestation that is you.

In his book Journey into Power, Baron Baptiste said, “Yoga is ultimately a journey into the truth: truth about who you really are, what you are capable of, how your actions affect your life.”

From the Yoga Sutras; “Through sustained focus and meditation on our patterns, habits, and conditioning, we gain knowledge and understanding of our past and how we can change the patterns that aren’t serving us to live more freely and fully.”

Through Asana and meditation practice we learn to breathe, focus and, most importantly, to stay. We practice not being reactive to the physical and mental stimulus and cultivate acceptance and trust that we are exactly where we are meant to be.  Through staying, we have the opportunity to observe our thoughts, challenge our perceptions and discover our truth.

Personally, yoga has set me free from a life of self judgement to a life of self-acceptance where I have the power to rewrite my story every day. As I learned to “stay in the pose” of life and challenge my perceptions, I discovered my truth. True freedom came to me with the realization that we are all miracles put on this earth for God’s Divine purpose. And with that realization I am free to allow the Divine light that resides in me be of service to the Divine light that resides in you.
